Désiré Cardinal Tsarahazana (born June 13, 1954 , according to another source: 1955, in Amboangibe , according to another source in Besahona Antindra [Sambava]) is a Malagasy clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toamasina . He has been President of the Bishops' Conference in his country since 2012 .

Life

Désiré Tsarahazana studied at the seminary of Antananarivo from 1979 and was ordained a priest on September 28, 1986 . He was a teacher at the Antsiranana Seminary in the 1990s.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on October 30, 2000 with the establishment of the new diocese as the first bishop of Fenoarivo Atsinanana . The Archbishop of Antsiranana , Michel Malo IdP , donated him episcopal ordination on February 18 of the next year . Co- consecrators were Albert Joseph Tsiahoana , Senior Archbishop of Antsiranana, and Archbishop Bruno Musarò , Apostolic Nuncio in Madagascar , Mauritius , the Comoros and the Seychelles . In 2006 he became Vice President of the Bishops' Conference of Madagascar. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Toamasina on November 24, 2008. With the elevation to the archbishopric on February 26, 2010 he was appointed Archbishop of Toamasina. In 2012, Tsarahazana was elected President of the Malagasy Bishops' Conference for the first time, and in 2015 he was re-elected.

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gregorio Barbarigo alle Tre Fontane in the college of cardinals . On October 6th of the same year, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . The takeover of his titular church took place on December 23, 2018. On June 6, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education .
