Carlos Cardinal Osoro Sierra (born May 16, 1945 in Castañeda , Santander Province , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Madrid .

Life

After graduating from high school, Carlos Osoro Sierra studied pedagogy and mathematics at the Complutense University in Madrid and then taught for a year at the Colegio La Salle in Santander . He then entered the late vocational college Colegio Mayor El Salvador in Salamanca and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical University of Salamanca , where he obtained both a degree in theology and philosophy. He also holds a degree in natural sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and a degree in education from the University of Salamanca .

On June 29, 1973 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Santander . He then became a youth minister in the Torrelavega parish and head of the Casa de los Muchachos . At the same time he was a lecturer at the Escuela Universitaria de Formación del Profesorado 'Sagrados Corazones' until 1975 . From 1975 to 1996 he was general secretary for diocesan pastoral care and episcopal representative for vocations , seminaries and the lay apostolate . From 1976 he was also Vicar General (until 1994) and from 1977 Regens of the diocesan seminary, Seminario de Monte Corbán (until 1996). He was also in the 1993 cathedral chapter called Santander of the diocese, which it 1994 provost chose. In 1996 he became the rector of the Centro Asociado del Instituto Internacional de Teología a Distancia (International Distance Theological School ) and of the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Religiosas San Agustín (Institute for Religious Studies ), which is affiliated to the Pontifical University of Comillas .

He received the episcopal ordination on February 22nd, 1997 in the Cathedral of Ourense by the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Lajos Kada ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela , Julián Barrio Barrio , and the Bishop of Tui-Vigo , José Diéguez Reboredo . On this occasion he chose the episcopal motto Per Christum et cum Ipso et in Ipso (“Through Christ and with Him and in Him”), which is based on the final doxology of the Prayer .

On January 7, 2002, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Oviedo ; the canonical occupation and official inauguration took place there on February 23 of the same year.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Valencia on January 8, 2009; the solemn assumption of office took place on April 18 of the same year. Carlos Osoro Sierra took over the post of Prior of the Valencia Commandery of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On August 28, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Madrid . The inauguration took place on October 25 of the same year.

Pope Francis appointed him on June 9, 2016, in addition to the first full professor of the ordinariate established on the same date for the faithful of the Eastern rites in Spain .

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere in the college of cardinals . He took possession of his titular church on February 25 of the following year. On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education .

In 2014 he was elected Vice-President of the Spanish Bishops' Conference. He was last confirmed in this office in March 2020.
