Cardinal Agustín García-Gasco y Vicente (born February 12, 1931 in Corral de Almaguer , Toledo Province , Spain , † May 1, 2011 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Valencia .

Life

Agustín García-Gasco Vicente attended the seminary of Madrid-Alcalá . In Madrid, on May 25, 1956, he received the sacrament of ordination in the Archdiocese of Madrid . Then García-Gasco Vicente went to the Pontifical University of Comillas for further studies and obtained a degree in Catholic theology in 1969 and a diploma in work sociology and human resources at the Instituto Jaime Balmes in 1970. He was pastor in Villamanta and in 1966 became professor at the seminary of Madrid and pastor of the parish of Santiago y San Juan Bautista . In 1976 he graduated in Business Administration in Barcelona and in 1977 in Group Dynamics from the Center for Psychology in Madrid. García-Gasco Vicente was appointed Episcopal Vicar of III in 1977 . Appointed Vicariate of Madrid. In 1979 he became a professor at the Instituto Teologico "San Damaso" Institución Arzobispo Claret .

On March 20, 1985 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Nona and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Madrid. He was ordained episcopal on May 11th of the same year by the Archbishop of Madrid, Ángel Suquía . Co-consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and later Cardinal to the Curia , Antonio Innocenti , and the Madrid Archbishop Vicente Cardinal Enrique y Tarancón . In 1990 he became president of the International Theological Institute for Distance Learning (Instituto Internacional de Teología a Distancia); at the same time, he taught at the National Distance Learning University (UNED) . In 1988 he was elected General Secretary of the Spanish Bishops' Conference and held this post until 1993. Pope John Paul II appointed García-Gasco Vicente on July 24, 1992 as Archbishop of Valencia .

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the college of cardinals . The resignation of García-Gasco Vicentes from the office of Archbishop of Valencia, submitted for reasons of age, was accepted by Benedict XVI. on January 8, 2009 and appointed him until the enthronement and solemn inauguration of his successor, Carlos Osoro Sierra, on April 18, 2009 as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese.

Cardinal Agustín García-Gasco Vicente was a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Ordinance of the Sacraments (2008 to 2011) and of the Pontifical Council for the Family (2008 to 2011).

He died in Rome, where he had traveled for the beatification of Pope John Paul II, probably of the aftermath of a heart attack .
