The Kolor is a red wine variety . It is a new breed by Johannes Zimmermann , which was created by crossing the grape varieties Pinot Noir and Teinturier du Cher in 1938 at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau . The information given by the breeder to the parents of the cross was confirmed by DNA analysis. Plant variety protection was granted in 1974. However, the Kolor seldom occupied commercially used acreage. In 2007 the area under vines in New Zealand was stagnating at 3 hectares .

The variety produces dark and colorful red wines , as it is a dye grape . Dye grapes not only have red skin, but also red instead of gray or colorless flesh. This means that there is also a significant proportion of red pigments in the juice , which makes the wine made from it particularly colorful. The pigments are present throughout the plant tissue. As a result, the leaves also turn red relatively early. It got this trait from the old Teinturier du Cher variety. Kolor is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

The late-ripening variety has not become particularly well known to this day and was replaced early on by other brightly colored varieties such as Dornfelder and Dunkelfelder .
