The State Viticulture Institute Freiburg was founded in 1920 by resolution of the Baden State Parliament in Freiburg, where there had been a state vine refinement company since 1917, and Karl Müller was appointed its first director.

history

In addition to vineyards in Freiburg im Breisgau , in the years up to 1945 it also received vineyards in Karlsruhe-Durlach ( Kraichgau ), Müllheim ( Markgräflerland ) and Lauda, ​​as well as mother gardens for testing and producing rootstock in Emmendingen and Ehaben. In 1937 the establishment was renamed from “Badisches” to “State Viticulture Institute”. In the same year, the management of the State Viticulture Institute was temporarily transferred to the oenologist Ernst Vogt, who was then appointed as the new director in 1939.

Since the foundation of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952, it has been under the Ministry of Agriculture of the state government of Baden-Württemberg. In 1952 and 1953, the State Viticulture Institute was affiliated with the experimental vineyards in Hecklingen and Durbach, and finally the experimental and teaching estate in Blankenhornsberg. From 1956 to 1967 the institute was under the direction of the botanist Aloys Wilhelm, under whose direction a new institute building was constructed and moved into in 1961. In 1967 the zoologist Bruno Götz took over the management of the institute. From 1974 to 1991 the botanist Günter Staudt was director of the institute. From 1991 to 1997 the institute was under the direction of the zoologist Günter Schruft. In 1997, the agricultural scientist Konrad Rühl took over as head of the institute and handed it over to Rolf Steiner in 2004 .

Research and Development

The institute currently (2019) has the Freiburg State Winery with vineyards in Freiburg and the Blankenhornsberg estate and is divided into the fields of plant protection, ecology, grapevine nutrition and soil science, resistance and clone breeding, viticulture, microbiology and experimental winery, wine chemistry as well as quality wine testing and viticulture index.

In its research, it works closely with the Faculty of Biology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

The tasks include applied, practical research in the areas:

  • Vine plant biology
  • Vine pests and diseases, including appropriate countermeasures (vine protection service) and implementation of the official review
  • Vine breeding and grafting
  • Viticulture with viticulture technology
  • special soil science, vine nutrition and greening management
  • special location customer
  • Wine treatment, wine composition, wine analysis including fermentation and residue issues
  • special business and labor management in viticulture and cellar management and marketing
  • Through periodic viticulture advice, regional treatment recommendations are issued to the viticulture practice during the growing season.

The Viticulture Institute Freiburg operates u. a. the breeding of fungus-resistant grape varieties (see also organic viticulture ), and only applies for plant variety protection and cultivar approval for those grape varieties that are officially assigned by the Federal Plant Variety Office in accordance with the provisions of the International Organization for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants ( UPOV , based in Geneva ) Rebart Vitis vinifera is identified and confirmed. This means that the wines of the corresponding grape varieties can come onto the market as quality wine within the scope of the provisions of the European market organization.

At the State Viticulture Institute Freiburg, the red wine varieties Cabernet Cantor , Cabernet Carol , Cabernet Cortis , Cabernet Carbon , Baron , Prior and Monarch and with Merzling, Johanniter , Helios , Solaris , Bronner, Souvignier gris and Muscaris, other white wine varieties were successful in breeding with more than 350 in 2008 Hectares launched on the market.
