List of grape varieties |
Johanniter is a fungus- resistant white wine variety bred in 1968 .
origin
The Johanniter is a breed by Johannes Zimmermann from the State Viticulture Institute Freiburg with the varieties Riesling x ( Seyve Villard 12-481 × FREIBURG 153- 39) (= Ruländer x Gutedel ).
The name was given in honor of Johannes Zimmermann, the former head of grapevine breeding at the Freiburg Wine Institute. He was proactive in breeding fungus-resistant grape varieties.
Ampelographic features
The similarities with the mother variety Riesling are unmistakable.
- The tip of the shoot is lightly bronzed and hairy with medium wool.
- The shoot growth is medium strong.
- The leaf is circular, five-lobed, wavy and moderately vesicular. The leaf has an open with a U-shaped stalk bay which is partially bounded by nerves and has no hairs.
- The grapes are compact, medium-sized, dense berries, and cylindrical. The berries have a scar point.
Maturity: medium late - between white Burgundy and Riesling
Expectations
The location requirements correspond to those of the Burgundy varieties. Because of its earlier budding in spring, the variety should not be planted in locations at risk of frost.
Yield
- Is a very fertile variety.
- Yield regulation is necessary for the production of high quality wines.
Advantages and disadvantages
advantages
- Has a medium resistance to downy mildew
- Has good to medium resistance to oidium .
- The winter frost resistance is considered good.
disadvantage
- Johanniter is sensitive to chlorosis , susceptible to botrytis and black rot .
Wine
The wines are strong, fruity and have similarities with Riesling and Ruländer . In wine tastings, the Johanniter received better ratings than standard comparison varieties from the same trial plot.
Compared to Riesling, the harvest results show a slightly higher yield, a must weight that is around 7 degrees Öchsle higher and lower must acid ( → acid (wine) ).
