Prior (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prior is a fungus- resistant red wine variety bred in 1987 . Prior has been on the State Weinbauinstitut Freiburg by Norbert Becker 23-416 x Pinot Noir (as parent variety, ♀), and from the varieties Joannès-Seyve Bronner (as father places ♂) crossed . The Bronner grape variety, in turn, emerged from the parent varieties Merzling (as mother variety , ♀) and Gm 6494 (as father population, ♂). Despite the influence of the Joannès-Seyve 23-416 and Gm 6494 grape variety, Prior does not belong to the hybrid grape family .

Prior was led by the breeder under the breeding line number FR 455-83 r. The variety has plant variety protection , the entry in the variety list has been requested. Small stocks are known in Switzerland . (0.3 hectare, status 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG)

In addition, around 1500 stocks from the Neumühle winery (Prior family) were planted in Worms, in the Rheinhessen growing area.

The name "Prior" is derived from the Latin word for "the former".

ancestry

To cross this variety, Norbert Becker used the parent varieties Joannès-Seyve 23-416 x Blauer Spätburgunder as mother and Bronner as father, which in turn emerged from the crossing of Merzling X Gm 6494 (or Geisenheim 6494). Gm 6494 was a seedling population that was crossed in 1964 by Vilem Kraus (1924-2013) in what was then Czechoslovakia from the grape varieties Zarya Severa x St. Laurent . Kraus offered the seedlings to Helmut Becker (1927–1990), who worked at the Geisenheim Research Station at the time, who recognized the importance of this material and further processed it in breeding in progeny tests. The seedling Gm 6494-5 was selected from the seedling population Gm 6494 due to its special performance and was later propagated and put into practice under the variety name Rondo as an independent grape variety.

Norbert Becker erroneously researched the Saperawi Severni grape variety instead of Zarya Severa as the mother variety lings for the seedling population, which was only given the designation Gm 6494 in Geisenheim, when Vilem Kraus was crossed in 1964 . A differentiated follow-up research by N. Becker's successor Volker Jörger together with colleagues from the Geisenheim research institute was able to show the error and the true parenthood has now been clarified in specialist circles since 2003. However, these findings could no longer be included in the 13th edition of the Taschenbuch der Weinsorten .
