Fulla (doll)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fulla ( Arabic jasmine blossom ) is a toy doll and the Arabic counterpart of the American Barbie . It was launched on the market in November 2003 by the Syrian company NewBoy Design Studio ( Damascus ), is manufactured in China and has since become a bestseller in the Islamic world. The chaste sister of the luscious US blonde became a hit when Barbie was banned from toy stores by Saudi Arabia for “little covering clothes and shameful poses”.

Fulla has almost the same body measurements as her role model Barbie, but less bust size. She wears long skirts and long-sleeved blouses "for home" and "for going out" a black abaya , a long coat with a headscarf. The originally extremely conservative clothing range has been spiced up for the more modern market in Egypt and Jordan: there are now Fulla variants with handbags, perfumes and similar accessories. A pink prayer rug can also be purchased. The Syrian inventors have meanwhile developed Fulla into an all-encompassing brand with massive advertising and brought coloring books, stickers, plastic cups, flip-flops and a Fulla card game onto the market, even if the card game itself conflicts with strict Islamic values. Even fulla cornflakes, a fulla ice cream in the shape of a jasmine blossom and a pink-green fulla bicycle are on offer.
