Leaves and grapes of the white variety Freisamer

Freisamer is a white wine variety . It is a new breed from Silvaner and Pinot Gris. In the meantime, the information provided by the breeder has been confirmed by DNA analysis. Freisamer was bred in 1916 by Karl Müller at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau , which is why the variety was also called Freiburg until 1958. The aim of the breeding was to improve the Pinot Gris, which at the time was very variable in yield. The entry in the list of varieties took place in 1956.

Today, the Pinot Gris, to which it is more similar in taste than the Silvaner, has largely prevailed against the Freisamer, which is why cultivation continues to decline. This tendency was made possible by a clone selection of stable yielding Graubugund variants.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is dense white wool, almost tomentose hair with a slightly reddish tinge. The yellowish young leaves are also very hairy.
  • The medium-sized leaves are mostly three- to five-lobed and only slightly curved. The stem bay is V-shaped to closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The leaf surface (also called blade) is soft and blistered. The structure of the bubbles is arranged in a circle around the base of the stem.
  • The cylindrical grape is small and dense. The elongated berries are small to medium-sized and green-yellow in color. The skin of the berry is thick. The aroma of the berry is almost neutral.
