Opaque red

Opaque red

Opaque red is a red wine variety . It is a new breed between Pinot Gris and the Teinturier du Cher dye grape . The crossing took place in 1939 by Johannes Zimmermann at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau . The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the cross has been confirmed by DNA analysis in the meantime. The plant variety protection and registration in the list of varieties carried out in 1971. In 2007, the area under vines in Germany was 22 hectares .

Opaque red produces a dark red wine with high color intensity and pronounced acidity . It is mainly used as a cover wine . To support the color of Pinot Noir or Blauer Portugieser, an addition of 3 - 5% is often sufficient. Opaque red is hardly suitable for single-variety expansion. In bad years, the red wines of the grape variety show very high acid values . Opaque red is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
