The Beberbach is an approximately 7 km long right tributary to the Schunter on the southern edge of the Papenteich plateau between Bevenrode and Wenden in the northern urban area of Braunschweig . Its catchment area covers about 14 km².

geography

The Beberbach arises north-east of the city of Braunschweig in the state forest teaching between the places Bevenrode and Groß Brunsrode in the district of Helmstedt . There is no actual source, the moist forest floor drains in several original ditches. The source location coordinates given here refer to the confluence of several streams from the Wöhren forest area and the Kordes Kamp arable tub at the edge of the forest, which is also the district boundary.

The brook strives in many turns in the main direction west and takes on the Hünenburggraben coming from the right and the Kleigraben from the left and reaches Bevenrode. It crosses under Kreisstraße 4 and flows in the main west through the town center and then between Waggum and the "Kippe" elevation that was artificially created from the dredging for the Mittelland Canal and between Bienrode and Bechtsbüttel in the direction of Wenden. From the right it takes up the Bechtsbütteler Graben and flows into the Schunter in the northern part of Wendens.

Since 1705/06 the Beberbach marked the border between the Guelph lines Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and Braunschweig-Lüneburg both in its upper reaches in today's Helmstedt district and in the lower reaches .

With regard to the type of flowing water , it is classified as type 18 ( loess-loam-shaped lowland creek ) in the upper reaches and type 14 ( sand -shaped lowland creek ) in the lower reaches . Its mean gradient is 3.6 ‰. From the confluence with the Schunter to Bevenrode it is classified as a water body of order II (responsible: entertainment association Schunter), from Bevenrode upwards as a water body III. Order (subject to maintenance: Braunschweig civil engineering office).

Between Bienrode and Wenden a street (Kreisstraße 81, the old federal highway 4 ) bears the name “Am Beberbach”. In Bevenrode, the street in the Am Pfarrgarten building area is called “Beberbachaue”. The name Beberbach / Beverbach occurs many times in northern Germany and can be derived from the word for beaver .

Water quality

Pollution from the sewage treatment plants in Bevenrode and Waggum as well as direct pollutant discharges previously pushed the water quality into a critical range. These values have improved today after the plants were closed. The strongly fluctuating water flow between a trickle in dry periods and a raging brook after melting snow or heavy rainfall is striking. Earlier waterways before the great deforestation in the Middle Ages, the field and meadow drainage of the modern era and the backfilling of the former moor area near Waggum with the dredging of the Mittelland Canal in the 1930s (the “dump”) can only be assumed. In 2013, after heavy downpours in the area of Hondelager Strasse in Bevenrode, there were brief floods and basement flooding.

Renaturation

After it has left its source forest, the Beberbach flows in its upper reaches mainly through intensively used agricultural areas. For this purpose, it was expanded, straightened and fastened with fascines in the 1950s and 1960s . After the fascines were not repaired for a long time, they have almost completely disappeared today, and the stream is slowly creating a winding bed again.

In 1999 an action group consisting of the local fishing club, the environmental, forest and federal property office, the entertainment association Schunter, the road construction office Wolfenbüttel and local farmers was formed. In the following year, the first renaturation measures were carried out in the middle reaches in the Wenden area . In the course of these measures, a wide floodplain area was created for the Beberbach , which is already flooded when the water level rises slightly. Other sections of the old stream were made more structured with stone barriers at the bottom of the river. Another effect of the stone barriers is the formation of pools that hold the water when the brook falls dry. Today the stream has also been renatured to a large extent in the upper reaches. Both in the area between Bevenrode and Wendhausen (so-called Waldrinne) and in the area of the Bevenrode building area “Am Pfarrgarten”, completely new, ecologically differentiated creek beds were created in 2015, partly with the conscious retention of the oxbow lakes.

Flora and fauna

The Beberbach is lined with trees on long stretches, but there are still longer stretches without shady riverbanks. The bottom of the water consists of sand, silt and gravel. The 2002 water quality report of the state of Lower Saxony classifies the Beberbach as critically polluted (quality class II-III). The main reason for this classification is the regular drying of the stream. Accordingly, the community in the brook is mainly composed of organisms that are only periodically adapted to water-bearing bodies of water. Only about 30% of the organisms found could be identified as typical running water organisms. There are 9 animal species that are on the Red List of Lower Saxony:

In addition, there are a number of fish in the Beberbach, especially in the renatured areas, such as the brook loach , sticklebacks , gudgeons , perch , mud whip , roach , chub and pike . By far the most common fish species are the brook loach and stickleback.
