Wenden is a district in the north of Braunschweig . It belongs to the city district 323 - Wenden-Thune-Harxbüttel .

location

Wenden is located on the western bank of the Schunter , which is crossed by the historic north-south long-distance trade route of Bundesstraße 4 at Wendebrück . This was later relocated as a bypass road east of the town center. From the east the Beberbach flows into the river at the height of a large furniture store, the floodplain of which still represents a natural settlement boundary today.

The Mittelland Canal , which has been dug since the 1920s, runs northwest of the town and, in addition to the Schunter, separates it from the neighboring towns of Thune and Harxbüttel . The federal motorway 2 to the south forms a further settlement border to the neighboring town of Rühme . The A 391 was expanded near the main road and already crosses the Schunter in the southern settlement area. Since then , Bienrode , on the other side of the Schunter, has been accessible via a passage through the motorway embankment.

The neighboring town of Bechtsbüttel , with which Wenden shared a train station, is in the east and already belongs to the Gifhorn district .

history

Archaeological excavations and the associated finds of numerous flint tools bear witness to an early settlement of the area around 10,000 years ago.

In 1031 the settlement was first mentioned as "Guinitthun". At that time the spelling 'Gu' was often used instead of the 'W'. The "von Wenden" family named after this place also belonged to Ludolf von Wenden, who as Ministerial Heinrich the Lion founded the monastery in Riddagshausen in 1143/44 .

coat of arms

Coat of arms Braunschweig-Wenden.png

The coat of arms is divided vertically and shows two also divided rafters in the colors silver and black.

The rafters were taken from the coat of arms of the noble family von Wenden, who led them on a golden background with green linden leaves. For the local coat of arms, however, the rafters were modified by a vertical separation.

The coat of arms was designed by Wilhelm Krieg, accepted by the local council on June 14, 1968 and confirmed by the administrative president of Braunschweig on November 7.

Infrastructure

Wenden is connected to public transport by buses and trams operated by Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH . The Wenden-Bechtsbüttel depot is on the Braunschweig – Wieren railway line . Trains can cross here .

schools

The village has a primary school and the Braunschweig Lessinggymnasium , which is also attended by students from the Gifhorn district.

Companies

The Perschmann Group is an iron, steel, brass goods and tools trading company founded by Heinrich Perschmann in 1866 . Other companies are the furniture store XXXLutz with its extensive sales area on both sides of the Schunteraue and the Fürsten-Reform honey sales company on the west bank of the Schunter.
