The Bundesautobahn 391 (abbreviation: BAB 391 ) - short form: Autobahn 391 (abbreviation: A 391 ) - also called Braunschweiger Stadtautobahn or Westtangente Braunschweig - is a motorway that runs north-south along the western edge of the city of Braunschweig . It has a length of twelve kilometers, connects the A 39 in the south with the A 2 in the north and finally turns north of Braunschweig near Bechtsbüttel into the federal road 4 to Meine , Gifhorn and Uelzen .
It was originally intended primarily to relieve the Braunschweig inner city and the so-called urban ring for the residents of the region and was intended to connect the Salzgitter area and the Harz region with the motorway network, but for many years also served for long-distance traffic and almost all heavy goods traffic from Poland and Berlin in the direction of Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart as well as the opposite direction. The route was used as a kind of diversion for the last then missing section of the A 39 between Cremlingen and the Wolfsburg / Königslutter junction .
However, the A 391 is not designed as a cross-regional connection. In the southern area in particular, it is therefore significantly below the usual motorway standard in terms of expansion and has no hard shoulder for several kilometers.
The motorway triangle Braunschweig-Südwest was rebuilt so that the A 39 leads through the triangle as the main carriageway; previously the A 39 from Salzgitter merged into the A 391 and vice versa. The reason for the conversion is the completion of the A 39 south and east of Braunschweig and the resulting gap between the A 39 and the A 2, which means that the A 39 is used more by long-distance traffic. The plan approval procedure for the renovation began at the end of February 2007; the plan approval decision was made on June 6, 2008. Construction work began in November 2008 and was completed on August 28, 2012.
Further construction
Earlier plans provided for the A 391 to continue at its current northern end on the B 4 to Gifhorn . There should be a connection to the A 32 in the form of a motorway triangle . The plans for this northern extension as well as for the construction of the A 32 have meanwhile been given up. Instead, the current plans in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 envisage a four-lane expansion of the B 4 to Gifhorn.
No further construction is planned at the southern end. The motorway ends at the Braunschweig-Südwest motorway triangle and merges into the A 39 . About a kilometer to the east, the A 36 joins the Braunschweig-Süd motorway junction , which continues via Wolfenbüttel and the northern Harz border to the Bernburg junction with the A 14 .
