Bundesautobahn 83 (abbreviation: BAB 83 ) - short form: Autobahn 83 (abbreviation: A 83 ) - was the project name of a motorway planned in the 1970sfrom Lauffen am Neckar via Ludwigsburg , Stuttgart , Tübingen , Hechingen , Villingen-Schwenningen to Hüfingen . It shouldtake uplong-distance traffic on the parallel B 27 .

At Lauffener Landturm , a motorway triangle was supposed to connect the Odenwald-Neckar-Alb motorway (A 45), which has now also been abandoned . In Stuttgart, the A 83 between Zuffenhausen (where the B 10 and B 27 today divides ) and Heslach would have been interrupted.

The execution was discarded, but the "new B 27" between Stuttgart-Möhringen and Tübingen , which opened between 1979 and 1994, is located in the planned course of the A 83 and is developed like a motorway ( yellow motorway ), as does the section from Bodelshausen to Balingen and in the further course from Bad Dürrheim to Donaueschingen.

At the beginning of May 2013, Donaueschingen's Lord Mayor Thorsten Frei suggested upgrading the section of the B 27 between Bad Dürrheim and Hüfingen to a motorway. It is hoped that this will enable the four-lane expansion between Donaueschingen-Mitte and Hüfingen to be completed more quickly. The Freiburg city tunnel is to be implemented in a similar way , where the B 31 will be upgraded to the A 860 .

In the requirements plan of the Fourth Law on the Amendment of the Long-Distance Road Expansion Act of November 15, 1993, the connection Leipzig - Chemnitz was designated as A 83. This route was realized as an extension of the federal highway 72 .

Planning history

In the Weimar Republic , the Eberbach - Heilbronn - Stuttgart - Tübingen - Hechingen - Donaueschingen - Tengen - Singen - Stein am Rhein (Switzerland) line with a branch at Thayngen via Schaffhausen to Zurich was in the second stage of expansion intended. The basic motorway network from May 1934 only included the Bad Hersfeld - Fulda - Würzburg - Heilbronn - Stuttgart route, which corresponds to today's A 81 and partially the A 7 . It was not until 1938 that an extension of this line via Donaueschingen to Schaffhausen was considered, which here also essentially corresponded to the route of today's A 81. Only between Donaueschingen and Schaffhausen was the route based on Reichsstraße 27. Another parallel motorway on the line later projected as A 83 between Lauffen, Stuttgart, Tübingen and Donaueschingen was not planned.

The expansion plan for the federal highways of the law of July 27, 1957 did not yet provide for the construction of a federal freeway, but the federal road 27 between the junction Ludwigsburg-Nord, Stuttgart, Tübingen, Rottweil, Donaueschingen and Schaffhausen in the "Blue Network" was the new or federal highways to be expanded.

The requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 of June 30, 1971 also did not contain any federal motorway planning . However, the new four-lane construction of the B 27 was intended for this. The project was divided into the following sub-projects:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 27 north of Bietigheim-Bissingen (triangle with the "Autobahn 13", later A 45 ) - south of Bietigheim-Bissingen four-lane Stage II)
B 27 south of Bietigheim-Bissingen - Tamm (junction with the "Autobahn 23", later A 81 ) - north of Ludwigsburg four-lane Level I.
B 27 north of Ludwigsburg - Kornwestheim - Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen or Stuttgart- Stammheim (cross with the B 10 ), later A 80 , as well as with the B 29 , later A 87 four-lane Stage II
B 27 Stuttgart- Degerloch - Stuttgart- Fasanenhof (junction with the "Autobahn 21", later A 8 ) - Leinfelden-Echterdingen four-lane completed
B 27n Leinfelden-Echterdingen - Filderstadt (triangle with the B 312 , later federal motorway 85 ) - Aichtal (triangle with the B 312, later A 85) - Tübingen (triangle with the B 27 / B 464 north of Tübingen; cross with the B 28 in Tübingen) four-lane ongoing project
B 27 Tübingen - north of Dusslingen (cross with the B 28n, later A 84 ) - north of Hechingen four-lane Level I.
B 27 north of Hechingen - Wessingen four-lane 1st lane completed, 2nd lane in level I)
B 27 Wessingen - south of Balingen ( B 463 ) four-lane Level I.
B 27 south of Balingen - Kreuz Villingen-Schwenningen (A 81) four-lane Stage II
B 27 Cross Villingen-Schwenningen - south of Villingen-Schwenningen ( B 311 , today: B 523 ) four-lane Level I.
B 27 south of Villingen-Schwenningen - Bad Dürrheim four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgency level I.
B 27 Bad Dürrheim - north of Donaueschingen (junction with "Autobahn 84", later A 86 ) - Hüfingen ( B 31 ) four-lane Level I.

With the restructuring of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the entire route was combined under the uniform designation as "Federal Motorway 83".

There was already a change in the network map of the federal government of January 1, 1976: the planning of the A 45 around Stuttgart was modified so that a northern extension of the A 83 route via Besigheim to Lauffen was necessary.

The requirements plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976 brought a further change in the alignment of federal motorway 83: between Lauffen (A 45) and north of Bietigheim-Bissingen was no more the construction of a motorway, but only the two-lane construction of the B 27n is planned. In addition, the urgency of sections of the A 83 changed. The following picture emerged:

section expansion was standing
north of Bietigheim-Bissingen - Tamm (junction with the A 81) - north of Ludwigsburg four-lane Stage Ia
north of Ludwigsburg - south of Kornwestheim four-lane possible further need

north of Donaueschingen - east of Donaueschingen four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgency level Ib

With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal trunk roads from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the A 83 came to an end. The plans were limited to the construction of new sections and sections of federal highway 27:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 27 Relocation between Kirchheim am Neckar , Walheim and Besigheim two-lane Level I.
B 27 Bietigheim-Bissingen - Tamm (A 81) four-lane ongoing project
B 27 Aichtal - Rübgarten four-lane ongoing project

B 27 four-lane 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway as an ongoing project

The B 314 between Blumberg (B 27), Stühlingen and Lauchringen should be rebuilt or expanded as far as possible in two lanes (urgency level I).

The third law amending the law on the expansion of the federal trunk roads of April 21, 1986 did not lead to the re-inclusion of the A 83 in the requirement plan. The expansion and new construction of Bundesstraße 27 was also carried out:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 27 Relocation between Kirchheim am Neckar , Walheim and Besigheim two-lane Level I.
B 27 Bietigheim-Bissingen - Tamm (A 81) four-lane ongoing project
B 27 Aichtal - Rübgarten four-lane ongoing project
B 27 Rübgarten - Tübingen four-lane, Level I.
B 27 four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgency level I.
B 27 Nehren - Mössingen - Bad Sebastiansweiler four-lane Level I.
B 27 Bad Sebastiansweiler - north of Hechingen four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane as an ongoing project
B 27 Wessingen - north of Engstlatt four-lane Level I.
B 27 Engstlatt - Balingen four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgency level I.

B 27 south of Villingen-Schwenningen - south of Bad Dürrheim four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgency level Ib
B 27 four-lane 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway as an ongoing project

To the south of Donaueschingen, construction or expansion of the B 27 was no longer planned, with one exception ( Riedböhringen area , two-lane as an ongoing project). The B 314 between Blumberg (B 27), Stühlingen and Lauchringen should be rebuilt or expanded as far as possible in two lanes (urgency level I).

The A 83 in Baden-Württemberg was still not included in the requirement plan of the Fourth Law on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of November 15, 1993. Instead, the name was given for the route Leipzig (triangle with the A 140 , today A 38) - Borna - Chemnitz (cross with the A 4 / A 72 ). The expansion and new construction of Bundesstraße 27 had the following projects as its subject:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 27 OU Besigheim two-lane ongoing project
B 27 Stuttgart-Degerloch - Filderstadt six-lane expansion urgent need
B 27 Rübgarten - Tübingen four-lane ongoing project
B 27 OU Tübingen-Derendingen four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgent need

B 27 Balingen - Dotternhausen two-lane further need
B 27 OU Schömberg two-lane further need
B 27 east of Donaueschingen - Hüfingen four-lane 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway in urgent need

To the south of Donaueschingen, a new construction or expansion of the B 27 was not planned except for the OU Blumberg -Zollhaus and the OU Blumberg-Randen (two lanes each if required). The new construction and expansion of the B 314 between Blumberg (B 27), Stühlingen and Lauchringen had also been canceled; only the OU Blumberg-Fützen / Blumberg-Epfenhofen (two-lane, ongoing project) and the OU Stühlingen - Grimmelshofen (two-lane, urgent need) were included.

The requirements plan of the Fifth Act on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 did not result in any new additions with regard to the A 83 in Baden-Württemberg. The Leipzig - Chemnitz connection was now designated as the A 72. Furthermore, the expansion and new construction of federal highway 27 was planned in Baden-Württemberg as follows:

Short name section expansion was standing
B 27 Leinfelden-Echterdingen - Aich (Aichtal) six-lane expansion further need
B 27 OU Tübingen four-lane urgent need
B 27 four-lane 1st lane under traffic, 2nd lane in urgent need

B 27 OU Neukirch two-lane further need
B 2 east of Donaueschingen - Hüfingen four-lane 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway in urgent need

To the south of Donaueschingen, a new or expansion of the B 27 was not planned except for the OU Hüfingen -Behla, the OU Zollhaus and the OU Randen (each with two lanes in urgent need). The new construction and expansion of the B 314 between Blumberg (B 27), Stühlingen and Lauchringen only included the OU Grimmelshofen (two-lane, urgent need).

List of traffic clearances

As early as the second half of the 1950s, the Bad Dürrheim bypass was completed with a length of 4 kilometers, which was to become part of the A 83 as the first lane.
