The federal motorway 683 (abbreviation: BAB 683 ) - short form: Autobahn 683 (abbreviation: A 683 ) - was built from 1974 to 1979 and led from the Dieburg motorway triangle ( A 680 ) via Münster to Rodgau -Hainhausen. The autobahn ended there and continued to Hanau as the B 45 . A few kilometers after the end of the autobahn, there was a link to the A3 at the Hanau junction.
In the 1980s, the autobahn was graded to become a federal road and is now part of the B 45. The old route of the B 45 between Dieburg and Hainhausen was also graded. This ended the dense parallel routing of two long-distance roads, and traffic could be calmed down through the town.
During the rededication, only the blue signposts were replaced by yellow ones. The blue kilometers and the motorway-like equipment with parking lots, hard shoulders and generous curve radii were retained. The curves at Eppertshausen and Rodgau-Dudenhofen have always been tight, with the former limiting the top speed to 100 km / h.
In the late 1990s, the four-lane expansion of the expressway to the north was continued via the end at Hainhausen. The connection to the A3 was supplemented with direct connections, the old roundabouts abolished. Thus today there is a continuous motorway-like connection Darmstadt - Dieburg - Hanau - Schlüchtern - Flieden - Fulda .
The former A 683 is now called the B 45 from Dieburg to Hanau-Steinheim (as described above). The further course of the route from Hanau-Steinheim to Hanauer Kreuz , however, is referred to as the B 43a .
