The federal motorway 54 (abbreviation: BAB 54 ) - short form: Autobahn 54 (abbreviation: A 54 ) - was the project name of a motorway planning planned in the 1970s, but later abandoned. Originally the federal motorway 54 was supposed to run from the Dutch border near Brunssum via Puffendorf , Bergheim , Langenfeld , Solingen , Remscheid , Radevormwald , Halver , Lüdenscheid to Werdohl . Except for two short sections, the A 54 was never completed. This includes, on the one hand, the section between the Monheim am Rhein junction and the Langenfeld junction (Rhineland), which is now known as the A 542 . On the other hand, a 6.8 kilometer long, four-lane section was built in Solingen as a dual carriageway ( Landesstraße 141n / Viehbachtalstraße ) between Schlagbaum and the Ohligser Heide ; this section has no direct connection to the rest of the trunk road network. The Cologne-Worringen junction is now where the A 54 and A 57 intersections were intended. Due to the preliminary work performed during the construction at the time, the downhill ramps are extraordinarily long and winding from today's perspective.

Planning history

The requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 of June 30, 1971 did not yet contain any planning for a federal motorway, but it did include the four-lane new construction and expansion of the B 55 and the B 229 . This project was divided into the following sections:

Short name section Urgency level
B 55 State border D / NL near Kerkrade / Herzogenrath - south of Alsdorf (cross with the B 57n ) I.
B 55 Cross with the B 57n south of Alsdorf - Alsdorf- Hoengen (triangle with today's A 44 ) III
B 55 Triangle with today's A 44 near Aldenhoven - south of Jülich - cross with the  B 56n - Elsdorf (cross with the B 1111 / today's A 61 ) III
B 229z Elsdorf (junction with the B 1111 / today's A 61) - Bergheim (junction with the autobahn 220 / later A 55 ) - Stommeln (junction with the B 59 ) - Cologne - Worringen (junction with today's A 57 ) III
B 229z Cologne - Worringen (cross with today's A 57) - Monheim am Rhein (cross with today's A 59 ) II
B 229z Monheim am Rhein (cross with today's A 59 ) - Langenfeld in the Rhineland (cross with today's A 3 ) I.
B 229z Langenfeld in the Rhineland (cross with today's A3) - south of Solingen - Burg an der Wupper - south of Remscheid - Wermelskirchen (cross with today's A1 ) III
A 160 Wermelskirchen (intersection with today's A1 and intersection with Autobahn 113, later A 31 ) - north of Hückeswagen - south of Radevormwald (intersection with Autobahn 150 Gevelsberg - Radevormwald - Gummersbach ) I.
B 229 south of Radevormwald (junction with Autobahn 150) - Halver - south of Lüdenscheid (junction with today's A 45 ) - north of Werdohl (triangle with B 236 ) II)

Even before the restructuring and new numbering of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, these federal road plans were combined into a uniform project under the internal name “Autobahn 208”. This project was continued from mid-1974 under the name "Bundesautobahn 54". At the same time, changes were made to the route

  • between the German-Dutch border, Jülich and Bergheim
  • between Langenfeld (Rhineland), Solingen, Remscheid and Radevormwald
  • between Lüdenscheid and Werdohl.

This resulted in the connection Brunssum (state border D / NL) - Übach-Palenberg - north of Baesweiler (cross with the A 51 ) - south of Linnich (cross with the A 56 ) - north of Jülich (cross with A 44) - north of Bergheim (cross with A 61) - Stommeln (cross with A 55) - Cologne-Worringen (cross with A 57) - Monheim am Rhein (cross with A 59) - Langenfeld in the Rhineland (cross with A 3) - north of Solingen - north of Remscheid (cross with A 31) - Remscheid-Lennep (cross with A 1) - south of Radevormwald (cross with A 43 ) - north of Lüdenscheid (cross with A 45) - south of Werdohl (triangle with B 236).

The A 54 between Brunssum and Werdohl was also planned under the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976. However, the level of urgency changed for the entire project. It was only listed as a “possible further requirement”. Only the route between Monheim am Rhein and Langenfeld (Rhineland), which was already an ongoing project, remained unaffected. With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the Monheim am Rhein - Langenfeld (Rhineland) line remained an ongoing project, as did the Stommeln section (triangle with A 540 and B 59) - Monheim am Rhein in urgency level II included as A 54. All other sections have been removed from the motorway planning. Nevertheless, some sections of the route were discontinued as a federal road construction project. The following plans were involved:

Short name section expansion Urgency level
B 55n north of Jülich ( B 1 ) - north of Bergheim ( B 477 ) two-lane new building in Urgency level I.
B 55n north of Bergheim (B 477) - Stommeln (A 540 / B 59) two-lane new building II
B 229 Bruges - north of Lüdenscheid - Werdohl two-lane new building II

With the third law amending the Act on Highway Expansion of April 21, 1986, the A 54 disappeared completely from the demand plan. It was replaced by the planning of a federal motorway 542 between Stommeln and Monheim am Rhein (further requirements) and the following measures:

Short name section expansion Urgency level
B 55n north of Jülich ( B 1 ) - north of Bergheim ( B 477 ) two-lane new building in Urgency level I.
B 55n north of Bergheim (B 477) - Stommeln (A 540 / B 59) two-lane new building II
B 229 Bruges - north of Lüdenscheid - Werdohl two-lane new building II

The A 54 was not included in the requirement plan even after the fourth law amending the law on the expansion of trunk roads of November 15, 1993. Only the following projects were planned:

Short name section expansion Urgency level
A 542 Stommeln - Monheim am Rhein further need
B 229 Kreuz Langenfeld (Rhineland) - connection to the B 229 to Solingen two-lane new building urgent need

The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 did not result in a new addition to the A 54. The controversial eastern continuation of the A 542 at the Langenfelder Kreuz was initially planned as L 405 / B 229n, but was abandoned by the red - green state government of North Rhine-Westphalia under Hannelore Kraft in 2010. However, the IHK Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid and the mayors of the cities of Langenfeld (Rhineland) and Solingen advocated registration for the new federal transport route plan in 2014. A continuation of the A 54 / Landesstrasse 141n to the east via Remscheid , Radevormwald and Halver to Lüdenscheid is currently no longer planned.
