  • The federal autobahn 620 (abbreviation: BAB 620 ) - short form: autobahn 620 (abbreviation: A 620 ) - begins at the Saarlouis motorway triangle and runs parallel to the Saar south of the city center of Völklingen , then through the state capital Saarbrücken to the Saarbrücken triangle . The motorway fulfills various tasks: On the one hand, it serves as a section of the connection between Luxembourg and Saarbrücken (and from there on to the A 6 ), on the other hand, it is a bypass route for many local crossings along the central Saar . In addition, the south-eastern section of the A 620 functions as an urban motorway for Saarbrücken. The A 620 has four lanes throughout, but there are no hard shoulders on both sides for long stretches.

From the A 620 between the Völklingen-Geislautern and Völklingen-Zentrum junctions, there is a good view of the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site . Because the route in the urban area of Saarbrücken runs almost exclusively in the formerly undeveloped floodplain , it is flooded again and again when the Saar floods over 3.90 m between Bismarck and Wilhelm Heinrich bridges. For this reason, the A 620 in this area is also jokingly called tributary of the Saar with 13 letters (= city motorway).

    Building history

Saarbrücken with the city motorway A 620 (2003)

Construction work on this section began in 1961 and was completed in 1963. The A 620 was opened on December 14, 1963 - until then it was called the B 406. On this day, the section of the A 6 between St. Ingbert and Saarbrücken was also opened to traffic. In order to enable the construction of the A 620 through the city center of Saarbrücken along the Saar, the front - younger - castle wall of the Saarbrücken castle was demolished and the one behind it, which still comes from the medieval castle complex, was dug up to ground level, thereby winning approx. 20 m of terrain for the route. The old bridge , which had been connected to the front wall until then, had become “too short”, the newly created gap above the new motorway was spanned by a steel footbridge (popularly known as the “bottleneck”). The historic Oberamtshaus on the castle wall , built by Friedrich Joachim Stengel , was demolished, as was the row of houses that closed off Neumarkt on the Saar side. The former rectangular square of the Neumarkt, which until then had a comparable function for old Saarbrücken as the St. Johanner Markt on the opposite side of the Saar, has not been recognizable as such since then and is characterized by the busy Wilhelm Heinrich Bridge.

There was a curiosity between the Saarlouis- Lisdorf and Wadgassen junctions : a temporary bridge over the motorway that had previously existed there made it necessary for the motorway to follow a tight combination of curves and only allow a maximum speed of 80 km / h. As part of the renovation work due to the new connection to the B 269 ( Bous (Saar) / Ensdorf (Saar) and France ), this “chicane” has no longer existed since February 2007. At this point, the Ensdorf AS was completed in mid-2008 with a new bridge over the Saar to the B 51 and a tangent to the B 269 , which runs in the direction of Überherrn and across the border to France. The specific plans for this had already existed since the mid-1980s.

    Urban planning

As part of the city center on the river project , there were plans to lead the motorway in Saarbrücken through a tunnel in the area between the Bismarck and Luisen bridges. On the one hand, this would have had advantages in terms of urban planning and traffic engineering: on the one hand, because of the regular flood closures, on the other hand, the noise and exhaust gases that arise from the motorway would have been banned into the tunnel. A tunnel would have largely avoided the closures. However, the project was postponed indefinitely in 2013 due to cost reasons and opposition from the population.
