The Neumarkt is a central square in the Saarbrücken district of Alt-Saarbrücken .

history

Until the destruction during the Second World War, it was shaped by the former market hall and the so-called hall building with the city library. In the course of the construction of the city motorway ( Federal Motorway 620 ) in the 1960s, the row of houses that closed off the square on the Saar side was demolished. The former rectangular square of the Neumarkt, which until then had a comparable function for old Saarbrücken as the St. Johanner Markt on the opposite side of the Saar, has not been recognizable as such since then and is characterized by the busy Wilhelm Heinrich Bridge. The street level of the central part has also been raised significantly through the construction of an underground car park. The original level and appearance can only be guessed at in the parking lot in front of the houses on the southwest corner (confluence with Wilhelm-Heinrich-Straße). Today the headquarters of the Sparkasse Saarbrücken and the HDI high-rise are located on the west side of the square . From April 2018 there will be a slight change in the traffic routing in order to increase the attractiveness somewhat. As part of the Stadtmitte am Fluss project , the plan was to relocate the city motorway into a tunnel and restore Neumarkt as a closed space. However, the plans for this have been suspended for a number of years due to cost reasons.
