Stadtmitte am Fluss ( SaF for short ) is a project that aims to make Saarbrücken more attractive . It was proposed by Lord Mayor Charlotte Britz .

content

The project, which was proposed for the first time in 2004, envisions a beautification of the city center. As a central project, it was planned to completely relocate the city motorway into a tunnel. A park was to be created on the area gained and a return to the historical city plan should be made possible. The plans for the motorway tunnel are currently suspended due to cost reasons. In contrast, individual sub-projects have been implemented in recent years. In St. Johann , the shabby Berlin promenade has been completely renewed and made handicapped-friendly . The Rabbiner-Rülf-Platz was built near the promenade with a flight of stairs into the Saar . The Wilhelm Heinrich Bridge was completely renovated. In Alt-Saarbrücken , Eisenbahnstraße was modernized, Neumarkt was rebuilt and the intersection of Ludwigsplatz , Eisenbahnstraße and Wilhelm-Heinrich-Straße was redesigned as part of the "Baroque meets modern" subproject.

criticism

The construction work, especially the tunnel, is controversial. Proponents of the project argue in favor of the project because of its greater attractiveness in the city center, a better environment (reduction in traffic noise and reduced pollution) and the disappearance of the unsightly motorway. The opponents of the project argue with the high costs of several hundred million euros, a traffic collapse in the city center and the construction noise. As an alternative to the motorway tunnel, various bypass routes were proposed to relieve the heavily frequented city motorway: the so-called southern bypass (connection of the A620 with the A6 through the Deutschmühlental), the so-called northern bypass (connection of the A1 with the A623 through the city forest) or the so-called . Small inner city bypass (connection of Viktoriastraße / Ursulinenstraße and Dudweilerstraße along the railway line). Overbuilding / covering of the city motorway to restore the historical city plan of old Saarbrücken is also being discussed.
