The federal autobahn  16 (abbreviation: BAB 16 ) - short form: autobahn 16 (abbreviation: A 16 ) - was a planned autobahn in the federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony .

The A 16 was supposed to connect Leipzig with the federal border with Poland . It was initially intended as a replacement for the B 87 from Leipzig via Torgau and Lübben (Spreewald) to Frankfurt (Oder) to the A 12 . Later, a changed tour from Torgau via Elsterwerda and Cottbus to Frankfurt (Oder) or via Elsterwerda, Hoyerswerda and Weißwasser to the federal border there and the possibility of continuing to the Polish A 18 near Sorau (pl. Żary) in Silesia were discussed. East-southeast of Leipzig, it was supposed to extend the now existing A 38 , which previously ended at the Parthenaue triangle on the A 14 . At a cross in Ruhland it should cross with the A 13 . A cross in Weißwasser was planned with the planned A 18 .

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan from 2003, the 49.9 kilometer section between the Parthenaue triangle and Torgau is classified as a further requirement . The four-lane expansion of the B 87 from Leipzig to Torgau and its two-lane continuation to Frankfurt (Oder) are urgently needed . The gradual expansion of federal highways 183 and 169 from Torgau to Ruhland is also urgent . A new feeder road from Hoyerswerda and Weißwasser to the A 13 near Ruhland was planned as Bundesstraße 160 until July 2011.

In November 2017, some called for district administrators of the surrounding counties in a "Torgau Declaration" to build a new motorway or trunk road, which should serve as a relief route for the south running motorways A 4 and A 14th The project is necessary to offer new companies attractive locations in Lusatia, which is still economically characterized by opencast mines, and to secure jobs threatened by structural change in the long term. A first draft of a route also suggested a route via Delitzsch , which would then cross the A 9 at Brehna . In general, the route should be based on previous roads. Before it could be implemented, the project would first have to be included in the federal transport infrastructure plan.
