The Autostrada A18 ( Polish for "Autobahn A18") is a motorway in Poland . It runs from the Krzyżowa junction , where it branches off the A4 and leads northwest to the German-Polish border near Olszyna in the rural community of Trzebiel . The federal highway 15 begins there . The motorway is 75 kilometers long and is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor III A.
In 2006, the southern carriageway built as the Reichsautobahn Berlin – Breslau was extended by a northern carriageway over a length of 71 kilometers. The non-modernized southern carriageway is expected to be modernized by 2023; the first 20 km behind the border with Germany are currently under construction.
Until the completion of the modernization, the route will be run as Landesstraße 18 (Polish: Droga krajowa 18 ). The rededication to the A18 should only take place after the conversion work has been completed.
history
Today's A18 was built in the mid-1930s as part of the Reichsautobahn 9 Berlin – Breslau (on the German side, today A13 and A15 ) in what was then German Silesia. The route was single-lane (southern carriageway), although it was already prepared for full expansion (e.g. the bridges were built wider or space was left for the second half of the carriageway). Only the short section from Lipiany (Linden) to today's confluence with the A4 at the Krzyżowa motorway junction was already designed with two lanes.
In 1993, between the Królów exit and the Forst / Olszyna border crossing, the previously non-existent northern carriageway was built in the motorway standard for 9.5 km. The renovation and expansion of the southern carriageway in this section did not take place.
In 1995, the two-sided rehabilitation of the 7 km long section between Golnice ( rural municipality Bolesławiec ) and the Krzyżowa motorway junction , which had previously had two carriageways, followed. Until 2001, this section was part of the A12 , which ran from Golnice to the then transition to the A4 at the Krzywa junction.
From 2004 the continuous construction of the north carriageway of the A18 between Golnice and Królów was pushed ahead. The construction work was divided into 4 sections. The work was completed in mid-2006 and cost around 398 million zlotys .
