  • Under construction
  • In planning
  • The Droga ekspresowa S6 ( Polish for "expressway S6") is an under construction or planned expressway in Poland and runs over a total length of approx. 420 kilometers from Goleniów (Gollnow) to Gdańsk (Danzig) . It runs almost parallel to the coast of the Baltic Sea and connects Szczecin (Stettin) with the three cities of Gdynia (Gdingen) , Sopot (Sopot) and Gdańsk (Danzig) . The S6 is between the node Goleniów-Polnoc and Gdansk-Południe a part of the European route E28 . On October 13, 2015, the S6 was expanded to include the northwest bypass of Szczecin and the bypass of the Tricity metropolitan region by a government decision . The previous bypass of Tricity is to be partially rededicated as the S7 expressway . With the exception of the northwest bypass of Szczecin, the rest of the S6 should be completed by 2020.

    Planning history

    The S6 near Gdynia

Even before 1945 there were plans for the Reichsautobahn Berlin – Königsberg , which was to connect the cities of Szczecin and Danzig. However, the chosen route, on which construction work began in sections until 1942, ran via Stargard in Pomerania (today Stargard) through the Pomeranian Lake District, Bärwalde (Barwice) , Bütow (Bytów) south of Gdansk to Elbing (Elbląg) , where it to connect to the already completed motorway to Königsberg in what was then East Prussia (today Kaliningrad , Kaliningrad Oblast , Russian Federation ).

After the expressway network plans for Poland from 1945, 1946 and 1963 had provided a connection between Szczecin and Gdańsk, which was similar to the plans before 1945, the plan from 1971 now contained a route further north via Koszalin (Köslin) . This route variant was also included in the plans in 1976 and 1985. However, it did not come to fruition until the political change in Poland.

With the increase in the number of cars and road freight traffic from 1990 onwards, there was a need for efficient east-west connections. The 1993 network plan again provided for a Szczecin – Gdańsk – Elbląg – Kaliningrad expressway . This route was also included in 1996.

In 2001, the route was omitted from the planning, but was resumed from 2003.

In 2007 the plans of the originally planned route of the S6 were changed:

    • A new route variant, approx. 180 km long, with the course Wicimice (Witzmitz) - Kołobrzeg (Kolberg) - Koszalin (Köslin) was investigated. On July 9, 2010, this was officially presented and approved.
    • On December 5, 2007 it was decided to start planning a north-west bypass of Szczecin (Stettin) with a length of over 50 km. Until 2015, this route was not part of the government's planned motorway and expressway network. On October 13, 2015, the northwest bypass was decided as part of the S6.
    • A continuation of the S6 from Gdynia (Gdynia) in a westerly direction has been planned since 2007. For this purpose, several route variants were examined that branch off from the already existing S6 between the Gdynia-Wielki Kack and Gdańsk-Karczemki junctions. The plans aroused considerable resistance from those affected.

    Bypassing Nowogard

The Nowogard Bypass (Naugard) comprises a 9.4 km long stretch of road with three nodes : Nowogard-Zachód (-West), Nowogard-Północ (-Nord) and Nowogard-Wschód (-East). The section is equipped with two lanes with two lanes each. The construction contract with the construction company Budimex was signed on March 31, 2010, so that construction work could start in April. The completion date was agreed for February 21, 2012. However, the construction work was accelerated so that the first carriageway could be opened to traffic on November 18, 2011. The second carriageway was handed over to traffic on December 22, 2011, and the section was completed 61 days before the date agreed in the construction contract. The construction costs amounted to 228 million zlotys , of which 186 million zlotys were borne by the European Union .
