The Droga krajowa 17 (short DK17 , pol. For, national road 17 'or, national road 17') is a country road in Poland . It currently runs on two sections from Warsaw to the Polish- Ukrainian border near Hrebenne . The total length is 162 kilometers. The first section from Warsaw to Garwolin is approximately 40 kilometers, and the second from Piaski to the state border is approximately 122 kilometers. The state road is part of the European route 373 along its entire course . In some sections, the state road has now been replaced by the S17 expressway . Once the expressway is completed, it will disappear from the road network.

history

The national road near Kołbiel .

The first section between Warsaw and Piaski was built in the years 1832-1835 under the supervision of Francis Christian, the second section Piaski- Tomaszów Lubelski was built under the supervision of Macej Bajer in 1834-1835. In 1840 the extension of the road to today's Polish-Ukrainian border began.

The entire course of the road was declared a state road by the Polish Road Act of December 10, 1920 and was part of the state road E81 until the reorganization of the road network in 1985. After this reform, the entire course of the road was assigned to the newly created state road 17. This did not change in the reform of the numbering of May 9, 2001.

After the handover of the Garwolin bypass in the course of the S17 expressway, the old route of the state road was downgraded to a municipal road in 2007 . Between 2010 and 2012, the section from the Lublin- Felin junction to the Piaski- Zachód junction was expanded to form the S17 expressway. The Piaski bypass, which opened in 2004, became part of the S17 expressway after modernization in 2012. In 2013, after the completion of the parallel, newly built expressway between Kurów and Jastków , the old route was divided into municipal roads. This also happened between Jastków and Lublin and in the urban area of Lublin in 2014.

Traffic safety

In order to improve road safety, the Drogi Zaufania (German: "Trust Roads") program was developed by the GDDKiA . As part of this program, various traffic safety measures were taken from 2008 onwards at places with an increased risk of accidents along the state road. The 17 km long section between Piaski and Łopiennik has been modernized. For this purpose, the carriageway was widened to form an alternating three-lane street , and local traffic was relocated to streets running in parallel.
