Garwolin ( IPA : gar'vɔlin) is a city in Poland in the Masovian Voivodeship, southeast of Warsaw.
history
The origins of the city probably go back to the beginning of the era. The first documentary mention took place only in 1386. The owner was the later voivode of Mazovia Andrzej Ciołek. When he died, the settlement became the property of his son Wigand. The town received town charter around 1408, the exact date is disputed. On July 20, 1423 the right was granted again, although the place was probably already a city. In the 16th century there was a brewery in the village that brewed a very popular beer . During this time the city traded with Silesia and Moravia and was an important trading center for the north. The pastor at that time was Kasper Sadłoch, who built the first bridge in Warsaw over the Vistula . The right of Garwolin to hold a weekly market and a fair was important for trade. In the second half of the 16th century there were 160 houses. 230 craftsmen belonged to the craft guild, mainly beer brewers , but also shoemakers , bakers , tailors , blacksmiths, etc. At the beginning of the 17th century there were already 262 craftsmen working in the village, 160 of them brewers. The attack by the Swedes and the Thirty Years' War largely destroyed Garwolin. In 1660 there were only 50 houses left. During the partition of Poland , the city was first under Austrian and in 1815 under Russian rule. The city's economy revived in the 19th century. The main reason was the construction of a road to Lublin . The connection to the rail network between Warsaw and Lublin was also an important economic factor for Garwolin. In 1862, 2,125 people lived in the city, 717 of them Jews and only 12 Germans. In 1881 there were 14,671 people. During the First World War there was a secret base of the Polish army in the city. In the 1930s the guild of furriers counted 196 masters and 800 journeymen. More than 70 percent of the place was destroyed by the German bombings in 1939 and 1944. The population was greatly decimated and almost all Jews were executed or deported. In the time of socialism, the handicrafts were hindered in their development by the hindrance of the private sector. When the crosses were to be removed from the agricultural school in 1983, the college protested and after a few months of “fighting for the cross” the crosses were allowed to return to the school. This action aroused interest both in Poland and internationally. In 1975 Garwolin lost its seat as a powiat through an administrative reform . With a renewed reform in 1999, the city was again the seat of its own powiat within the Masovian Voivodeship.
