The Droga krajowa 20 (short DK20 , pol. For, national road 20 'or, national road 20') is a country road in Poland . It runs from the Stargard- Wschód junction of the S10 expressway in an easterly direction via Szczecinek , Miastko , Bytów and Kościerzyna to the Wielki Kack junction in the city of Gdynia . With a total length of 319 km, the road crosses the Pomeranian Lake District and Kashubian Switzerland and crosses the two voivodeships of West Pomerania and Pomerania .

Some sections of today's road were declared a state road by the Polish Road Act of December 10, 1920. The section from Bytów to Kościerzyna was part of State Road 294. The section between Kościerzyna and Gdynia was designated State Road 295. Until 1945, the line between Stargard and Bytów was part of the former Reichsstraße 158 , which came from Berlin to Lębork in eastern Pomerania . The section between Bytów and Kościerzyna was part of the former Reichsstrasse 144 .

After the reorganization of the road network in 1985, new state roads were assigned to the road. There were six state roads on the route of today's state road:

the national road 21 from Miastko to Szczecinek
the national road 149 from Stargard to Drawsko Pomorskie
the national road 175 from Drawsko Pomorskie to Szczecinek
the national road 206 from Miastko to Bytów
the national road 209 from Bytów to Kościerzyna
the national road 220 from Kościerzyna to Gdynia

With the reform of the numbering on May 9, 2001, the previous six state roads were merged to form the new state road 20.

Modernizations

Kościerzyna bypassing

The Kościerzyna bypass bypasses the city from the south for a length of 10.9 km. The road branches off from the existing road at the western city limits and initially runs south of the city in an eastward direction via the Kościerzyna-Zachód and Kościerzyna-Południe nodes to the Kościerzyna-Wschód node east of the city. Then the road heads north to the Wieżyca junction, where it crosses the former route of National Road 20. The road cross-section of the bypass will include a 2 + 1 lane . The call for tenders began on October 16, 2013 and ended with the signing of the contract between GDDKiA and a consortium consisting of Strabag Sp. Z oo and Heilit + Woerner Sp. Z oo on September 10, 2014. Within 30 months, the project documents, the issue the building permit and the construction of the road completed. The traffic handover took place on October 1st, 2017. The cost was 165 million zloty.

Bypassing Żukowo

A bypass of Żukowo is planned as part of the bypass of the Tricity metropolitan region along the S7 expressway . So far, different routes have been examined.
