  • The Polish Autostrada A8 is a completed, toll-free section of motorway that bypasses Wroclaw from south to north ( Wroclaw motorway bypass ; Polish : Autostradowa Obwodnica Wrocławia ). The total length of the motorway bypass is 35.4 km. Of the total length, approx. 22.3 km are signposted as a motorway. The rest is marked as expressway S8 , Landesstraße  8 and Voivodschaftsstraße 372 . The costs for the complete completion of the A8, which took place by August 31, 2011, amount to 4 billion zlotys .

    Planning history

In the network plans from 1945, 1946, 1963 and 1971 a connection from Łódź via Wroclaw to Czechoslovakia was planned. The network plans from 1976 and 1985 only contain one connection between Łódź and Wroclaw, which should be connected to a north-south route. In the 1993 network plan, the route from Łódź to Wroclaw is then referred to as the A8, which should later meet the A3 . The route is still included in the 1996 network plan. Since 2001 the connection between Łódź and Wroclaw has been planned as the S8 expressway . The connection to the S3 expressway is no longer available. Only the Wroclaw bypass remains of the A8.

    Stages

The construction work was divided into three stages and took place from 2008 to 2011.
The construction contracts were signed on October 16, 2008 (stage 1), on May 20, 2008 (stage 2a) and on October 22, 2008 (stage 2b). On August 31, 2011, the entire motorway was opened to traffic.

    1. This section was implemented as part of the Wroclaw motorway bypass, but is part of the S8 expressway .

    Question about toll collection

The case of toll collection on the A8 autostrada was not decided from the start. According to the government decision of July 16, 2002, the motorway will be subject to tolls. The motorway junctions are made so that the toll can be levied. According to the debate by politician Grzegorz Schetyna in 2008, the trip should be free. On 27 June 2010, the Minister of Infrastructure promised Cezary Grabarczyk that all highways along major cities toll-free detours for passenger cars (cars), lorries (trucks) to 3.5 tons and for motorcycles remain. On August 27, 2011, during the open house, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited the motorway construction site and assured that the Wroclaw bypass will remain toll-free for cars , trucks up to 3.5 t and motorcycles . However, the motorway should be downgraded to an expressway so that the exemption from tolls does not violate Polish law and no toll obligation can be introduced later. In contrast, the Polish Ministry of Transport decided on September 1, 2011 that the bypass should continue to be signposted as a motorway and be removed from the list of toll motorways. The last information was confirmed by the government in early December 2011.

    Rędziński Bridge

The Rędziński Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Oder on the Polish A8 motorway and the largest of its kind in Poland . The reinforced concrete structure is attached to a 122 meter high pylon . The superstructure of the bridge is 612 meters and together with the elevated roads leading to the bridge 1742 meters long. Both lanes are equipped with three lanes.
