Grzegorz Juliusz Schetyna ( ˈgʐɛɡɔʂ sxɛˈtɨna ] (born February 18, 1963 in Opole ) is a Polish politician and has been the party leader of Platforma Obywatelska (PO) since January 2016 .
) [From November 2007 to October 2009 he was Interior Minister , from July 2010 to November 2011 President of Parliament and from September 2014 to November 2015 Foreign Minister .
Political career
Schetyna studied in the 1980s at the philosophical and historical faculty of the University of Wroclaw and was chairman of the independent student association there for several years . After martial law was proclaimed in 1981 , he joined the anti-communist Solidarność , which was now working underground . In 1988 he also became chairman of the student strike committee of the Wroclaw universities and in 1989 took part in the round table as a representative of the opposition student organizations . After the system change , he was appointed deputy voivod of the then Wroclaw Voivodeship in 1991.
Schetyna has been a member of the Sejm , the Polish parliament , since 1997 . He was first a member of the Liberal Democratic Congress , then the Freedom Union and has been a member of the Platforma Obywatelska (PO) since 2001 . Within this he initially acted as general secretary and has been chairman of their regional association in Lower Silesia since 2006 .
In 2007 Schetyna became Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and Minister of the Interior in Donald Tusk's first cabinet . Due to the so-called “gambling affair”, suspected of supporting the gambling industry to the detriment of the Polish state, he was prematurely dismissed from office in 2009 and replaced by Jerzy Miller . However, he then received the post of group chairman of the Civic Platform . 2010 Schetyna eventually became the President of Parliament as the successor of the president elected Bronisław Komorowski appointed. Until Komorowski officially took office, he served as provisional president from July 8 to August 6, 2010.
In the course of intra-party conflicts over the leadership of the PO, Tusk succeeded in ensuring that Schetyna had to retire to the second row; between 2011 and 2014 he had to be content with chairing the parliamentary committee on foreign policy. In September 2014, after his chairman and party rival Donald Tusk became the new President of the European Council in Brussels, he was appointed Foreign Minister by the new Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz .
After the parliamentary elections in autumn 2015 , in which the Civic Platform (PO) lost its government majority to the national conservative PiS , Schetyna was elected as the new party leader in January 2016 without any opponents. Within the party, he was repeatedly accused of authoritarian leadership. The former deputy mayor of Warsaw Jacek Wojciechowicz , one of the founding members of the PO, left the party in the conflict with Schetyna. He accused him of single-handedly deciding on candidacies or participating in televised debates. According to Wojciechowicz, Schetyna behaves like a shell player and black marketeer from the time of the People's Republic of Poland who illegally exchanges foreign currency ( cinkciarz ).
In the parliamentary elections on October 13, 2019 in Wrocław, he was elected Sejm member of the 9th legislative period with 66,859 votes.
