Congress Liberalno-Demokratyczny

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kongres Liberalno-Demokratieyczny (short: KLD ) was a liberal and Christian party in Poland .

The KLD emerged from the Solidarność movement. Party leader was the future Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk . The party called for a free market economy and individual freedom and advocated European integration , rapid privatization of state-owned companies and a decentralization of the government.

In the parliamentary elections in 1991 , the KLD won 7.5% of the vote and moved to the Sejm with 37 out of 460 seats . In 1993 the KLD only received 4.0% of the votes and thus failed because of the threshold clause . On March 20, 1994, the party merged with the Democratic Union ( Unia Demokratyczna, UD ) to form the Freedom Union ( Unia Wolności, UW ).

In 2001 some party members together with members of the Solidarność election campaign ( Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność, AWS ), led by Donald Tusk, founded the Civic Platform party ( Platforma Obywatelska, PO ).

In 2005 the UW was finally transformed into the Democratic Party ( Partia Demokratyczna, PD ).
