Rainer Wohlfeil

Rainer Wohlfeil (born April 27, 1927 in Königsberg ) is a German historian .

Rainer Wohlfeil studied history and law at the universities of Göttingen and Mainz from 1950 to 1955 , where he received his doctorate under Ludwig Petry on the position of the Palatinate in the war constitution of the German Confederation . After a research stay as a DAAD scholarship holder in Madrid ( CSIC , 1955/56), his habilitation followed in 1964 with a thesis on Spain and the German survey 1808–1814 at the University of Mainz. From 1964 to 1966 he taught as a private lecturer. During his employment from 1957 to 1970 at the Military History Research Office in Freiburg im Breisgau, most recently as “Senior Historian”, he wrote numerous studies on military history , including the pioneering study on the concept of military history.

At the University of Freiburg he taught as a private lecturer until 1970 as part of his rehabilitation. In the winter semester 1969/70 he took over a professorship at the University of Cologne . After his appointment as adjunct professor in 1970, he received offers to the universities of Hamburg, Cologne, Trier and Saarbrücken. He decided on the University of Hamburg and was appointed full professor on February 2, 1971. In 1973/74 he headed the Department of History in Hamburg. Under Wohlfeil, Hamburg developed into a center for research into the peasant wars of the 16th century. During his time, Wohlfeil caused a sensation by establishing scientific contacts with the GDR . In 1990 Wohlfeil retired. His academic students include Rainer Elkar , Ruth Kastner , Franklin Kopitzsch , Rainer Postel and Klaus Wittmann .

His main research interests are Spanish history, historical imagery , the age of the Reformation, Charles V and military history.
