Rainer Postel

Rainer Postel (born February 21, 1941 in Hamburg ) is a German historian .

Rainer Postel graduated from the Johanneum in 1960 and studied history and German at the universities of Munich and Hamburg in the following years . His academic teachers who shaped him were Jochen Bleicken , Franz Schnabel and Fritz Fischer . With Fritz Fischer he received his doctorate in 1970 on Johann Martin Lappenberg . In the same year he became assistant to Rainer Wohlfeil at the history seminar of the University of Hamburg. In 1982 he received his habilitation on the Reformation in Hamburg. In 1983 Postel became a professor in Hamburg and taught there in particular the early modern period. From 1994 until his retirement in spring 2007 he held the chair for early modern history, with special emphasis on social and economic history at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg.

His main research interests are the history of the Reformation, the constitution and law as well as the historiography in Hamburg, also in comparison to other Hanseatic cities. After his retirement, Postel will focus on the history of the late Hanseatic League. He was awarded the prestigious Lappenberg Medal by the Association for Hamburg History .
