Joanna Grażyna Kluzik-Rostkowska (born December 14, 1963 in Katowice ) is a Polish politician . She was co-founder of the Polska Jest Najważniejsza party , Minister of Labor and Social Policy in the Jarosław Kaczyński government in 2007 and Minister of Education in the Tusk and Kopacz cabinets from 2013 to 2015 .

She finished her studies in journalism at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science of the University of Warsaw . During her studies she was active in the Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentów (Independent Student Association - NZS).

In the 1980s she worked for the underground newspaper Tygodnik Mazowsze (Mazovian Weekly) and other samizdat magazines . Since 1989 she has worked as a journalist for the politics section of Tygodnik Solidarność (Solidarność weekly).

Professional activities

Work as a journalist

In 1992 she was the head of the reporting department of the monthly Konfrontacje . In the same year she began working for the Express Wieczorny (Evening Express), whose editor-in-chief was Andrzej Urbański , who was then a member of the Catholic right-wing conservative Porozumienie Centrum (Center Agreement - PC) . Among other things, she worked as a representative of the head of the country and report editorial team, as well as head of the report editorial team. After 1996 she worked as a journalist for the regional and political department of the weekly Wprost . After 2000, she headed the business department of the weekly Nowe Państwo (New State). From 2001 to 2004 she was the deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly Przyjaciółka (girlfriend). In the course of her career she was active as an investigative journalist and reported from war zones (including Bosnia-Herzegovina and Chechnya ).

Work in the Warsaw City Council

In 2004 she started working in the Warsaw City Council as the main specialist in the press office. In 2005 she became the representative of the mayor Lech Kaczyński for women's and family affairs.

Political activity

In the parliamentary elections in 2005 , she ran for the constituency of Warsaw on the list of Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice - PiS), but won no mandate. On November 17, 2005, she became Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, where she took over the duties of government plenipotentiary for equality between men and women (this office was abolished by the new Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz ). She held this office until July 13, 2007. On that day she was appointed Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Regional Development by Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński.

Shortly before assuming the post of Minister of Labor and Social Policy on August 13, 2007, she gave an interview to Gazeta Wyborcza in which she spoke positively about the subject of “ in vitro fertilization ”, which was clearly opposed by the Catholic right-wing radical party that supports the government Liga Polskich Rodzin (League of Polish Families - LPR) evoked. In other public statements she criticized the Marsz Równości and the Parada Równości, among others . At the same time she spoke out against Roman Giertych's proposal to introduce a “ban on propaganda for homosexuality” in the Education Act. She was Minister until November 16, 2007.

In November 2010 she was expelled from the Prawo i Sprawiedliwość party and then founded the Polska Jest Najważniejsza party together with Elżbieta Jakubiak, who was also excluded . From November 2013 to November 2015 she was Minister for Education in the Tusk and Kopacz cabinets .
