Zyta Janina Gilowska (born July 7, 1949 in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie ; † April 5, 2016 ) was a Polish economist and politician . She was at times Polish finance minister.

Career

Gilowska graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1972 , before moving to the Maria Curie Skłodowska University as a researcher . There she received her doctorate in economics in 1981 and later rose to become assistant professor. In 2001 she accepted a call from the Catholic University of Lublin as full professor .

Gilowska was temporarily vice-president of the Platforma Obywatelska party , for which she was a member of the Sejm between 2001 and 2005 . On May 21, 2005, she left the party. In January 2006, Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz appointed her to his cabinet as finance minister, but in June she had to resign after it became known that she had worked as an informal worker for the Polish secret service in the 1980s. After Jarosław Kaczyński took over the post of Prime Minister in July, however, she returned to the head of the Ministry of Finance in September and was thus also a member of the Board of Governors of the European Investment Bank . In the parliamentary elections in Poland in 2007 , she ran as a candidate for PiS and was re-elected to parliament. Since the Platforma Obywatelska, led by Donald Tusk , emerged from the vote as the winner, there was a change of government and Jacek Rostowski took over the Ministry of Finance. In February 2008 Gilowska resigned from her parliamentary seat. In February 2010, Gilowska was appointed a member of the Monetary Policy Council ( Rada Polityki Pieniężnej ) by President Lech Kaczyński . She resigned from the committee in October 2013.
