Tomasz Lipiec

Tomasz Wojciech Lipiec (born May 10, 1971 in Warsaw ) is a Polish sports enthusiast , journalist and politician . From August 31, 2005 to July 9, 2007 he was Minister of Sport in the cabinet of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and Jarosław Kaczyński . In 2012 he was sentenced to three years in prison for corruption .

Life

He was Lipiec as a walker at the World Race Walking Cup in 1993, 1997 and 1999, at the World Championships in Athletics in 1997. In 1992, 1996 and 1999 he was the Polish walking champion. Tomasz Lipiec also took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics as a walker . In 1993 Lipiec was banned for four years for doping. The decision was later overturned because the doping test was not carried out correctly. Therefore he was not active from 1994 to 1995 because of doping.

He studied administration and marketing at the Warsaw Business School ( Szkoła Główna Handlowa , SGH) and then worked in a sports marketing agency. He also wrote for a supplement to Gazeta Wyborcza , worked on Dla Ciebie radio and in the Department of Fitness and Sport. From 2001 to 2003 he worked in the Polish Sports Federation. From 2003 he was director of the Warsaw Center for Sports and Recreation. In February 2005 he became a member of the board of the Polish Olympic Committee. On August 31, 2005, Lipiec became Minister of Sport. On July 9, 2007, Lipiec submitted his resignation. This was preceded by allegations of corruption. He was arrested on October 25, 2007 at the behest of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau ( Centralne Biuro Antykorupcyjne ). After paying a bail of 80,000 zlotys, Lipiec was able to leave the prison on July 18, 2008. The trial against him began in April 2009. Two years later, on April 17, 2012, he was sentenced to 3.5 years' imprisonment and a ten-year ban on public office. The sentence was reduced to two years and three months in 2013. He was finally released in August 2014.

Tomasz Lipiec is married and has two children.
