Jarosław Adam Gowin ( pronunciation ? / I ; born December 4, 1961 in Cracow , Poland ) is a Polish politician and chairman of the small party Porozumienie, which he founded . From 2011 to 2013 he was Justice Minister of the liberal-conservative government coalition of PO and PSL and from 2015 to 2020 under the government of the national-conservative PiS Minister for Science and Education . He was also Deputy Prime Minister between November 2019 and April 2020 and resigned from his posts in the dispute with the PiS over the date of the 2020 presidential election during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland . Life

Gowin studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He was also able to study at Cambridge University through a scholarship . At the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw he completed his doctorate with a dissertation on The Church in the Time of Freedom from 1989 to 1999 (pln. Kościół w czasach wolności 1989-1999 ). From 1994 to 2005 Gowin was editor of the Catholic monthly magazine Znak . In 2003 he was also one of the founders of the private European Pastor Józef Tischner University (pln. Wyższa Szkoła Europejska im. Ks. Józefa Tischnera ) and has been its rector ever since.

In the 2005 parliamentary elections , Gowin stood for the liberal Platforma Obywatelska (German Civic Platform , PO) and won a mandate for the Senate with 157,083 votes . Two years later he was elected to the Sejm again in the early parliamentary elections in 2007 with 160,465 votes . In the parliamentary elections in 2011 he was again a member of the Sejm with 62,570 votes in constituency 13 Kraków II.

On November 17, 2011, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced Gowin's nomination for the post of Justice Minister in his second cabinet . In January 2013, however, a dispute broke out between the two in the debate about the Tusk-supported introduction of a registered partnership for same-sex couples . Gowin called not only the liberal bills of the opposition, but also the more restrictive draft from his own parliamentary group as unconstitutional. On April 29, 2013, Gowin was dismissed as Minister of Justice by Tusk, the formal resignation by the President took place on May 6. Marek Biernacki was appointed his successor .

On December 7, 2013 Gowin founded the economically liberal and conservative party Polska Razem (German Poland together ). As a result of a cooperation with the national-conservative party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (German Law and Justice , PiS) in the 2015 parliamentary elections , he was appointed Minister of Science and Education in Beata Szydło's cabinet. On November 4, 2017, after quarrels with party colleagues, he founded a new party called Porozumienie (German: Understanding ), of which he is chairman.

Gowin is married and has three children.
