Witold Bańka (2018)

Witold Bańka (born October 3, 1984 in Tychy ) is a former Polish politician and sprinter . From 2015 to 2019 he was Polish Minister of Tourism and Sports . He has been President of the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2020 .

Life

Banka had specialized in the 400-meter run . Several times he was used at international championships in the 4 x 400 meter relay . At the European Athletics U23 Championships 2005 in Erfurt and at the Universiade 2007 in Bangkok, he won gold with the Polish team. At the 2007 World Athletics Championships in Osaka, he was part of the Polish relay, which finally won the bronze medal. In 2009 silver followed with the Polish team at the Universiade in Belgrade .

He set his personal best of 46.11 seconds on August 23, 2007 in Osaka . In 2012 he ended his sports career. He then worked as a freelance management consultant and coached companies in public relations with the media and in image campaigns.

On November 16, 2015, the non-party Bańka was appointed Minister of Sport and Tourism to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Beata Szydło . In April 2016 he became a member of the ruling PiS party .

In 2018, Bańka announced that he would be running for President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He won the candidate duel against the previous WADA Vice President Linda Helleland and was elected President at the WADA Conference on November 7, 2019. Bańka took up his new post on January 1, 2020.
