Summer Universiade 2009
The 2009 Summer Universiade , officially the XXV. Summer Universiade was held in Belgrade , Serbia , from July 1st to July 12th, 2009.
canditature
Applications for the 2009 Summer Universiade began in early 2004. In addition to Belgrade, the cities of Monterrey in Mexico and Poznań in Poland applied . One advantage for Belgrade was the fact that some major events were to be held there in the years to come. These included the 2005 European Basketball Championships , the European Volleyball Championships , the 2006 European Water Polo Championships and the 2007 European Summer Olympic Youth Festival .
On January 19, 2005, at a ceremony in Innsbruck, Belgrade was announced as the venue for the Summer Universiade. The late Mayor of Belgrade Nenad Bogdanović was present .
mascot
The mascot of the Universiade is a sparrow with a cap. This was chosen because the sparrow is not only symbolically connected to the host city, but also because it has speed, dynamism and skill as properties that the participants also need for the competitions. The name was determined in a competition. In April 2009 the three names Srba, Cvrle and Dživdžan remained. The final name was chosen by the 10,000 volunteers at the Universiade. They chose the name Srba.
Sports facilities
The Universiade was held in 69 different sports venues in Belgrade and the surrounding area. Other cities with sports facilities were Inđija , Novi Sad , Obrenovac , Pančevo , Smederevo , Vršac and Zrenjanin .
