The 26th Winter Universiade was to take place from January 30th to February 9th 2013 in the Slovenian city ​​of Maribor and would have been the first Universiade on Slovenian soil. On March 16, 2012, the FISU announced that it had withdrawn the hosting rights from the city of Maribor. The reasons for this were serious delays in the construction of the sports facilities and ultimately the resignation of the entire organizing committee. The Italian region of Trentino was named as the new host .

Maribor was the only applicant to host the 2013 Winter Universiade. Almaty ( Kazakhstan ) and Calgary ( Canada ) had also shown interest in applying, but refrained from doing so. Almaty was later awarded the Winter Universiade 2017 . The total budget of the event should be 252.6 million euros, of which 71.8 million euros should go to investments in new sports facilities, 158 million euros for the construction and renovation of accommodation and 22.8 million euros for other infrastructure such as roads and gondola lifts etc. are omitted. Around 70% of the budget should also go to tourism after the Universiade .

The 2013 Winter Universiade held a total of 66 competitions in eleven sports, 33 of which were for men, 29 for women and four for mixed teams. Most of the disciplines are internationally recognized and are also held at other major sporting events such as the 2014 Winter Olympics. Exceptions are the synchronized figure skating competition and the mixed team sprint in cross-country skiing.
