The 2017 Summer Universiade , officially XXIX. Summer Universiade , took place from August 19th to 30th in the Taiwanese capital Taipei .
Protests at the opening ceremony and boycott
The opening ceremony threatened to fail, because after about the tenth nation no more athletes came to the stadium and for almost an hour only flags were carried in without further explanation. The reason was protests in front of the stadium against reform of civil servants' pensions in Taiwan. Finally, the athletes streamed back into the stadium to great cheer.
One team was missing because the People's Republic of China had indicated in advance that it would boycott the opening ceremony, as its athletes could not be expected to watch as Taiwan's president was officially introduced and applauded in the stadium and the Taiwanese national flag was waved in the stands . At the Olympic Games in London , following a complaint from the VR Chinese and at the urging of the British Foreign Ministry, Taiwan's flag was removed from the cityscape, because the government in Beijing insists on its claims to power and does everything in its power to ensure that Taiwan is not a fully fledged state internationally is perceived. That the spectators in the stadiums wave the red and blue national flag at the Universiade cannot be taken for granted. At other international sporting events in Taiwan, the organizers sometimes forbid this in advance obedience, because on the international stage Taiwan's athletes are not allowed to compete as "Taiwan" or under the official name of the "Republic of China", but only under the name of "Chinese Taipei".
Competition venues
Most of the plants are assigned to five different areas within Taipei . There are also some facilities outside of Taipei.
