Obrenovac ( Serbian - Cyrillic Обреновац ; German Obrenowatz ) is a city in the metropolitan area of Belgrade , Serbia . It is the administrative seat of the Opština Obrenovac .

The city is located about 30 kilometers southwest near the Sava and Kolubara rivers . According to the 2002 census, the city has 23,600 and the municipality 70,975 inhabitants. In addition to the town of Opština, the following villages:

history

The settlement of the Obrenovac region began in pre-Christian times. Slavs settled here in the 9th century . During the Ottoman rule over the Balkans the place was called Palež . During the time of the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the city was given the name Zweibrücken . After the successful Second Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman occupation, the place was named after the Serbian royal house Obrenović in 1859 .

Obrenovac was one of the cities hardest hit during the flood disaster following the Yvette Balkan low in 2014. Obrenovac had to be completely evacuated temporarily.

economy

In the Kolubara Basin south of Obrenovac there are extensive brown coal deposits , which are mined in open-cast mining . Based on this, the two largest Serbian coal-fired power plants "Nikola Tesla" A and B , located on the western edge of the city, shape the city's economic life.
