Stari Grad ( Serbian - Cyrillic Стари Град , German translation: Old Town) is the oldest district of Belgrade and one of 17 districts that make up Belgrade , the capital of Serbia . The historical heart of Belgrade is in Stari Grad.

Cityscape

Stari Grad is characterized by four separate urban units, which reflect the urban development from the 15th century to the first half of the 20th century. The actual core of Stari Grad is the part of the city that has been stretching from the Kalemegdan Park to the former city wall (it described the rectangle between Cara Dusana , Francuska , Obiličev Venac and Kosaničev Venac streets ) since the 16th century .

The structure of the fortress of Belgrade with the upper and lower town originates in its current form from the extensions in the 15th and 18th centuries. In front of the fortress is the Little and Big Kalemegdan. The quarter on the Danube terrace, Dorčol, was considered the former Jewish quarter. After the demolition of the city wall after 1868, the new districts of Stari Grad stretch to Takovska ulica and Ulica Kneza Miloša .

The oldest part of Stari Grad is characterized by old buildings and the Saborna crkva church with the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate as well as the Serbian National Museum, the Serbian National Theater on Trg Republike and the boulevard Ulica Kneza Mihaila and the Kapetan Misino Zdanje on Studentski trg. The city's last mosque, the Bajrakli džamija , is also located here. The Jevremovac Botanical Garden , the Parliament of Serbia and the Old and New Royal Palace are located in the areas that were expanded after 1868 .

geography

The 50-hectare fortress of Belgrade lies on a limestone rock 50 m above the Sava estuary in the Danube . Today the largest park in the Stari Grad district, the Kalemegdan, is located on the former glacis .
