Surčin ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сурчин , German  Surtschin ) is a city and municipality in Serbia .

The city belongs to the metropolitan area of ​​the capital Belgrade and was part of Zemun until 2003 . According to the 2011 census, the city has 17,356 and the municipality 42,012 inhabitants.

history

The area of ​​the parish has been settled since early human history. Finds from prehistoric times are quite common. So far it is clear that there were earlier settlements in the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Stone Age and Roman Age.

The current place was built in 1745 as part of the military border . The first settlers who came settled here from the late 18th century from the neighboring settlements New Pasua in Srem and Banat Franzfeld, in turn, of families from Württemberg , Baden , the Breisgau , Baden-Durlach , the Alsace and Lothingen founded were. After Protestants were allowed to settle here from 1859, and after the Banat military border was dissolved in 1872, large numbers of Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed families settled in the area, which later became part of the Danube-Swabian population of Yugoslavia.

In Syrmia there were initially the parishes in Alt Pasua (Slavonian), Neu Pasua (German) and Neudorf. 1863 halfway between Neudorf and Alt Pasua. In 1863 a new parish was founded between Neudorf and Alt Pasua. Parishes were founded in Boljeuci in 1858, in Beschanija in 1865, and in Surtschin in 1869.

In 1895 the place had a population of 35,691. After the end of the Second World War, the resident German minority was expelled .

In the period from 1991 to 2002, the community's population grew from 35,591 to 38,695. Most of them were refugees in the aftermath of the Yugoslav wars.

Surčin was a separate municipality until 1965 before it was incorporated into the municipality of Zemun. After there were often votes for a solution to Zemun, the Belgrade city council approved and Surčin became an independent municipality again in 2003.

economy

The majority of the population works in agriculture. The main facility is Belgrade Airport , which opened on April 28, 1962.
