The community dates from the first half of the 18th century when the Habsburg monarchy occupied northern Serbia from 1717-1739. The settlement, built as a suburb of Belgrade, was originally called Karlstadt. Since the early 19th century, Palilula has been predominantly inhabited by Serbs. In the late 19th century, Palilula became part of the continuously built-up area of Belgrade. The city consists almost entirely of residential areas with many commercial facilities.
