Borča ( Serbian - Cyrillic Борча ) is an urban settlement in the municipality of Palilula in the Serbian capital Belgrade, north of the Danube . Borča has 35,150 inhabitants (as of 2002).
history
Borča was first mentioned in 1375 under the name Barcsa (or Bercse ). At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . In 1537 the place was conquered by the Ottomans. During the Turkish Wars, Borča was the center of the Ottoman military border and was heavily fortified. It was conquered by the Habsburgs in 1717 and part of Austria-Hungary in 1873 .
In 1918 Borča became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . In 1941 it was occupied by the Germans and taken by the partisans in 1944.

Since December 2014, the almost 1,500-meter-long Mihajlo-Pupin Bridge as part of the northern bypass of Belgrade has connected the town with the Zemun district south of the Danube.
