Provinces of Serbia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to the Serbian constitution from 2006, the provinces of Serbia ( Serbian Покрајине Pokrajine ) are the autonomous province of Vojvodina in the north and the autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija in the south. Central Serbia is directly subordinate to the Serbian government in Belgrade . The two provinces occupy just over a third of the total area of Serbia . In fact , Kosovo and Metohija are now identical to the sovereign state of Kosovo .

Historically, they are linked to the “Autonomous Provinces” of Serbia (created in this form in 1974) within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

(1) The autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija has been under the administration of UNMIK since 1999 . On February 17, 2008, the so-called Republic of Kosovo declared its (internationally controversial) independence from Serbia. According to the Serbian constitution, the province forms an inseparable part of the Republic of Serbia, which also refers to UN resolution 1244 from 1999.

(2) For now, there are still some unanswered questions about the exact border line between North Macedonia and Serbia .

(3) The indicated number of inhabitants refers to the current status of July 2016 of the Republic of Kosovo.
