Jacek Krzysztof Czaputowicz (born May 30, 1956 in Warsaw ) is a Polish politician ( PiS ). In the Morawiecki I cabinet , he was Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland from the end of 2017 and was Foreign Minister from January 9, 2018 until his resignation on August 20, 2020.

Life

Czaputowicz studied geography at the University of Warsaw from 1980 to 198e and graduated from the Faculty of Economics in 1986. In 1997 he received a PhD from the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

In the 1970s and 1980s, he sat as opponents of the regime several times in prison one. As a member of the pacifist underground organization Ruch Wolność i Pokój (WiP, German: Movement Freedom and Peace), which was close to the banned Solidarność trade union , he maintained contacts with the Spanish embassy in Warsaw. The Spanish secret service registered him as a source, but the files that became known three decades later do not reveal whether Czaputowicz knew about it. The communist-controlled Polish secret service SB was informed of these contacts.

In the early 1990s he became head of the consular department in the Foreign Ministry. During the first PiS government from 2005 to 2007 , he was promoted to head of the Foreign Ministry's planning staff. After that he was head of the State School of Public Administration .

From 2014 the politician was a member of the PiS program council . He became Deputy Foreign Minister at the end of 2017 and Foreign Minister at the beginning of 2018.

Positions

He takes the view that the Polish demand for reparations from Germany for the damages and victims of World War II is justified. Like the Polish PiS government, Czaputowicz is an opponent of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

criticism

According to Der Spiegel , Jacek Czaputowicz's daughter, Magdalena Czaputowicz, is said to have worked for one of the Deputy Secretary General of the Group of European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) in the European Parliament in 2018 and is still working there. The PiS government is accused of preferring relatives of top politicians.
