Péter Szijjártó (born October 30, 1978 in Komárom ) is a Hungarian politician. Since September 23, 2014 he has been Hungarian Foreign Minister in the Orbán III and Orbán IV cabinets .

Life

education

Péter Szijjártó grew up in a wealthy family in northern Hungary. During his school days he lived in the United States for half a year. Then Szijjártó studied international relations and sports management at the University of Budapest.

Political career

Szijjártó began his political career in Győr when he was elected to the city assembly for the Fidesz party there in 1998 and took over the post of deputy chairman of the committee for education, culture and sport. He was also one of the founders of the local branch of the Fidesz youth organization Fidelitas and was elected vice-president of the organization for all of Hungary. From 2005 to 2009 he was its president.

Szijjártó has been a member of the Országgyűlés, the Hungarian parliament, since 2002 (in his first term he was the youngest member). In 2004 he was appointed deputy chairman of the committee for youth and sport.

Szijjártó also took over the office of spokesman for Fidesz and, after its election success in May 2010, became the spokesman for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán; he held the office until 2012. Then Orbán gave him the chair of several committees that dealt with Hungary's trade relations. After the previous Foreign Minister, Tibor Navracsics, was nominated as Commissioner for Education and Culture in the European Commission and confirmed by the European Parliament, Orbán appointed Szijjártó Foreign Minister. He took office on September 23, 2014.
