Arancha González
Arancha González Laya (born May 22, 1969 in San Sebastián ) is a Spanish economist and diplomat. She has been the Spanish Foreign Minister since January 2020.
Origin and education
Arancha González Laya was born in San Sebastián, Basque, and grew up in Tolosa . She studied law at the University of Navarra in Pamplona and then completed a postgraduate degree in European law at the Carlos III University in Madrid . In addition to her native Basque , she speaks Spanish, English, French, German and Italian.
Career
González began her career as a partner in the (then still) German law firm Bruckhaus Westrick Stegemann in management consulting with a focus on trade, competition and state aid.
Between 2002 and 2005, González was spokeswoman for the European Commission on Trade and advisor to the EU Commissioner for Foreign Trade Pascal Lamy . She then took on various tasks for the Commission in the field of international trade, including negotiations between the EU and the South American Mercosur , Iran , the Gulf Cooperation Council , the Balkans and the Mediterranean countries. She also advised developing countries on trade options in Europe.
González was chief of staff for Pascal Lamy during his tenure as WTO General Director between 2005 and 2013. In this role, she played a leading role in the introduction of the WTO's Aid for Trade initiative , as well as in the Enhanced Integrated Framework , a joint initiative of various international organizations to strengthen the trade capacities of the world's poorest countries. She worked as the representative of the WTO Director General ( Sherpa ) to the G-20 .
From 2013 to January 2020 she was Director General of the International Trade Center (ITC) in Geneva .
On January 10, 2020, the non-party Arancha González, who never held a political office in her home country, was nominated as Foreign Minister in the Second Cabinet by Pedro Sánchez , who was sworn in on January 13, 2020. When she took office, she spoke out in favor of a repositioning of Spain in the EU and globally that it would work for the defense of multilateralism and human rights and a reorientation of the policy of international cooperation.

González is an advocate of the unity of the state in Spain and a willingness to enter into dialogue on the question of Catalan independence efforts.
