International Gender Champions ( IGC ) is a network of female and male leaders from different countries, international organizations and civil societies, which aims to achieve gender equality . It was founded in 2015 by Caitlin Kraft-Buchman from Women @ TheTable, the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Pamela Hamamoto and the then Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), the Danish Michael Møller.

Obligation

The International Gender Champions undertake to refuse to participate in committees in which only people of one gender are represented. In addition, everyone has an individual commitment to implement two gender equality initiatives in their work. In the words of Caitlin Kraft-Buchman, IGC's strategy is to ensure that many organizations are making “small steps, big changes” towards gender equality. When the IGC was founded in 2015, Møller emphasized that the unique concentration of international organizations, representations of member states, research and teaching institutions as well as civil society initiatives make the international center Geneva an ideal platform to show practical ways for leadership in this area. Joint actions could have a global impact in order to achieve more peace, rights and well-being for all people on this planet. The members of the initiative have a special responsibility to use this potential for more gender equality.

The network

There are currently over 235 International Gender Champions in Geneva, New York , Vienna , and Nairobi . Among them are the UN Secretary General António Guterres , the heads of the UN offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi , the International Labor Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UNHCR , the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), representatives of the member states and civil society groups. After joining IGC, UN Secretary General Guterres made it his goal to win other leaders over to the campaign for equality. In a male-dominated world, the empowerment of women must be a top priority. Women's rights are human rights, attacks on women are attacks on us all. Our world needs more female leaders. And the world needs more men who stand up for gender equality.

Impact Groups

IGC organized so-called impact groups , working groups that formed specialists in certain areas. At the WTO ministerial conference in Buenos Aires in December 2017 , the IGC Trade Impact Group comprised 120 WTO members and observers, who drew up the first international declaration that formulated an explicit connection between the economic empowerment of women and successful trade. Susan Malcorra, president of the conference, called the declaration a great achievement. Together they came to the realization that women can play a central role in a fair, just and sustainable international trading system.

Events

In 2017 and 2018, Geneva's Jet d'eau was illuminated with the turquoise logo of the International Gender Champions on International Women's Day .
