The Tisza family were originally Calvinists from the lower nobility of Transylvania . Lajos Tisza studied in Berlin and entered politics in 1861 with the liberalization of Hungarian domestic politics through the February patent . Like his brother, Tisza worked to achieve a compromise with Austria . He became a member of the Reichstag , first for the Deák party and later for its successor, his brother Kálmán's Liberal Party . Like his grandfather of the same name, he became the chief clan of Bihar County . In 1871 he was appointed Minister of Labor and Transport in the Kálmán Tisza government.

After a major flood, Tisza was the royal commissioner responsible for the generous reconstruction of Szeged from 1879 to 1883 . For this he was appointed count in 1883. Tisza was considered a less popular politician, but absolutely loyal to the liberals.

In 1892, at the instigation of Prime Minister Sándor Wekerle, he was appointed Minister á latere or Hungarian Minister at the royal court camp , who had to ensure the permanent connection between the Viennese court and the ministries in Budapest. He tried to strengthen the influence of the Hungarian government on Emperor Franz Joseph I. He had to vacate his office in 1894 because of the loss of confidence in the Tisza faction in Franz Joseph in favor of Gyula Andrássy . From 1875 until his death in 1898, Tisza was chairman of the Hungarian forest administration. Without any descendants of his own, he made his nephew István Tisza the main heir to his vast estates.
