Geszt is a Hungarian community in the county Sarkad in Békés county .
geography
The municipality is located in the Great Hungarian Plain , right on the border with Romania . The neighboring municipality is Mezőgyán.
history
The population, still free peasants in the Turkish era , became serfs under the rule of the Habsburgs , who were also landlords here , which they remained until 1848 .
Since 1760 the originally Calvinist family Tisza, who came from the lower nobility of Transylvania , was the sole landlord in Geszt. The Tiszas built a baroque castle here in 1771 and lived in the village until 1945.
